About Us: Tamturi Flat-Coats

Why I Do What I Do

Flat-Coated Retrievers are people dogs.  They are very happy being close to their people and thrive when given attention and tasks to accomplish.  They give so much in return: love, loyalty, and forever friendship!

I am a home based kennel and I only breed occasionally,  So some years I don't have puppies at all.  Please check my Litters Planned page for litter information.

Breeding Flat-Coats

I Love what I do!

And I do love raising puppies! I can sit and watch them all day long!  These little guys are so much fun and so special. They have amazingly sweet temperaments and just love life!

My Breeding Policy

My breeding program is and always will be to breed for temperament first!  Then I breed for health, agility and looks, in that order, all within the breed standard.  A dog that is not of a good temperament is not a good companion and every dog I place is placed as a companion.  Show dogs, field and hunting dogs, and therapy dogs, are all first and foremost companions.

Raising Special Puppies

I wish to give my puppies the very best beginning possible.  So with that in mind, they are whelped and raised in my living room.  They are handled and cuddled daily.  They spend their first weeks within close range of their mother and I.  I socialize them as much as is  safely possible.  They are introduced to as many different sights, sounds and surfaces as I can safely give them. When old enough, they spend time outdoors, weather permitting, but they always sleep inside.

The Breed

Originally bred to flush and retrieve upland game and waterfowl, Flat-Coated Retrievers transfer their determination, desire and verve on the hunting field to everyday life, enthusiastically participating in family activities and in the show, obedience and agility rings.  Slightly racier and more moderate in bone than other retriever breeds, the Flat-Coat has a solid black or liver-colored coat that protects him from the elements and lies straight and flat.

Described by all who meet him as cheerful, optimistic and good-humored, the Flat-Coat excels as a family companiion.  He requires regular vigorous exercse however, due to his working heritage.  Dog sports such as obedience, agility and hunt tests provide both mental and physical exercise.  Among Sporting breeds, the Flat-Coat is easy to maintain, needing only occasional brushing and bathing.

Simply Exceptional

MickToffee-9.jpg

The Flat-Coat is primarily a family companion hunting retriever.  He is keen and birdy, flushing within gun range, as well as a determined, resourceful retriever on land and water.  He has a great desire to hunt with self-reliance and an uncanny ability to adapt to changing circumstances on a variety of upland game and waterfowl.

As a family companion he is sensible, alert and highly intelligent; a lighthearted, affectionate and adaptable friend.  He retains these qualities as well as his youthfully good-humored outlook on life into old age.

A Flat-Coat is a cheerful, devoted companion who requires and appreciates living with and interacting as a member of his family.  To reach full potential in any endeavor, he absolutely must have a strong personal bond and affectionate individual attention.
